As a Software Engineer on the sBTC team at Stacks Labs, you'll help build sBTC — a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset that brings BTC into smart contracts, secured by a decentralized network of signers.
You'll operate autonomously in a fully remote role, collaborating with a talented, globally distributed team to design and implement the protocol, signer software, and tooling that move Bitcoin in and out of the Stacks blockchain. This is a hands-on engineering role with real ownership over some of the most critical, security-sensitive infrastructure in the Stacks ecosystem.
Outcomes You'll Drive
- A secure, correct peg between Bitcoin and Stacks
Deposits and withdrawals move real Bitcoin reliably and safely, backed by threshold-signing coordination that holds up under adversarial and edge-case conditions, not just the happy path.
- Signer software that performs under real-world conditions
The sBTC signer network stays healthy, observable, and resilient in the presence of faults, network partitions, and delays — because it's securing real Bitcoin, not test funds.
- Tooling that makes sBTC easier to build on, monitor, and debug
CLI clients, monitoring utilities, and benchmarking tools give internal teams and external partners clear visibility into signer health and peg operations, reducing the time it takes to diagnose and resolve issues.
- A codebase built for scale and change
Strong engineering fundamentals — scalable architecture, disciplined refactoring, thorough testing — mean the sBTC protocol can absorb new features and integrations without accumulating risk.
What You'll Do
Core sBTC Protocol Engineering
- Contribute to developing, maintaining, and testing the sBTC protocol and its signer software.
- Design and implement core peg mechanics — deposits and withdrawals — and the threshold-signing coordination that secures the sBTC wallet.
- Implement rigorous and thorough monitoring and testing to meet the stringent security and performance requirements of a system safeguarding real Bitcoin.
- Design and implement supporting tools and utilities, such as CLI clients, applications that support moving sBTC on or off the Stacks blockchain, and utilities for monitoring signer health, benchmarking, or debugging.
- Collaborate with other teams on new product features across the Stacks blockchain, including applications that support moving sBTC on or off the Stacks blockchain and protocol integrations.
- Work closely with internal teams and external partners, communicating design decisions and trade-offs clearly as sBTC integrates with new products and partner systems.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of experience building and shipping products.
- Strong, demonstrated engineering fundamentals, including scalability, architecture, refactoring, algorithms, and testing.
- Experience building and operating security- or reliability-critical backend systems.
